Happy 2014, Friends! I'm excited to begin 2014 with a little R and R. No, I'm not talking about rest and relaxation (those of you who know me well, know that there isn't a whole lot of that in my life!). I'm referring to Rebekah "Bex" Borucki (whom I had the pleasure of interviewing this past summer - you can read that post here) and Rachel Tenenbaum Yuger ( a new friend and founder of The Self Help Socialite). These two ladies were kind enough to put together a Sugar Detox for anyone interested in participating. After a few too many holiday indulgences, I was inspired to hop on board. A bunch of SiciLean friends and followers joined in, as well, and it's been so exciting to see this not-so-little community form (I'm told that we've grown to over 300 detoxers!).
We know all too well how damaging sugar (which I'm loosely defining as refined sugars and refined carbs) is to our bodies and our emotional state. At times when I've cut back on or eliminated sugar entirely, I've noticed a pretty dramatic improvement in my energy level, my mood and my mid-section. And it didn't take long to see the changes. It's scary, when you think about how many hidden (and not so hidden) sugars we consume on a daily basis and how much our bodies are compromised by it. So...
If you'd like to join in on the sugar-free fun, just request an invite into the RandRsugardetox Facebook Group. One of us will add you to the group and that's it - you're in! Whether or not you decide to join us for the sugar detox, I'll be posting some sugar-free recipes each week so that you can add them into your repetoire (make sure to subscribe here). The bottom line is, do as much or as little as you are comfortable with and remember, good health is created one choice at a time.
The first healthy choice I made was to prepare a big pot of the Green Goddess "Detox" Soup. It's full of gorgeous greens and is a terrific way to detoxify and nutrify the body. Two big jars of it are in my fridge so, no matter how busy I get this week, I know I have a healthy lunch or snack at the ready :)
Happy New Year to all of my SiciLean friends! I wish you health and vitality this year, and always. xoxo
Green Goddess "Detox" Soup
1 large head of broccoli (florets and stems)
2 stalks of celery
2 cloves garlic, smashed
2 cups baby spinach
5 cups of water or broth (either vegetable or chicken broth work well)
salt and pepper, to taste
Rough chop all of the vegetables and place them in a large stockpot with the garlic, the liquid (water or broth) and the zest of 1 lemon (set the rest of the lemon aside). Set heat to medium high and bring the soup to a boil. Turn down the heat to medium low and simmer until the broccoli stems can be easily pierced with a knife (about 20 minutes). Allow to cool lightly, then puree in the blender or food processor (an immersion blender can also be used).
Once soup is pureed, add the juice of 1/2 of the lemon. Add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with a little more lemon zest, if desired.
